Our native Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is the most familiar of evergreens.
Its scarlet berries and dark green, shiny, prickly leaves are associated with Christmas. It has been cultivated since ancient times. It grows slowly to form a small conical tree (15m) making it suitable for enclosed areas. Its dense foliage makes excellent wildlife shelter. Despite its prickles holly makes good winter fodder for farm animals. Single trees are often defended by a pair of mistle thrushes, partly for the long lasting food supply as holly berries survive even the hardest of winters. The wood is used for inlay work and carving as chess pieces for example.
Holly was said to ward off witches, poison, goblins and lightening. As the home of fairies it was unlucky to cut down a Holly tree. Hardy in all but waterlogged positions. Represents T (Tinne) in the tree alphabet.
About the trees
All the trees are sown from British seed. They are specially grown for maximum root development - the best start a tree can get. They are from quality certified stock and carry an EEC Plant Passport for export requirements. They are grown in pots so that they can be transplanted throughout the year and not just "in season" as is the case for bare rooted stock. The pot also protects the root system during transit and sustains the tree while waiting to be planted out in its new home. The description of the tree and the full planting instructions below are included with every gift.
Free personalised plant marker
To ensure your gift is cherished & nurtured for years to come each gift comes with a high quality plant marker, carefully engraved to your requirements. Our plant markers are made from specially etched and anodised aluminum, a material of traditional character, which will not compete with the plants for attention, but will last for decades. They are used worldwide in Botanical Gardens and Research Institutions & gardens open to public including the National Trust.
The standard plant marker is 6cm x 10cm and can accommodate 30 characters and also include the common & Latin name of the chosen tree.

If you want to say more we offer an upgrade to a larger plant marker (9cm x 15cm), which can take 120 characters, for an additional £5.00.
Free gift wrapping
Each tree gift comes in a cute drawstring hessian bag. We then add a greetings card printed for the occasion with your personal message. Ribbons of your choice are added to the tree & swirled around the posting tube. We finish with a sprinkle of suitable confetti for the occasion! All tree gifts are packed in attractive purpose made tubes that have been tested against the rigors of postage by Royal Mail.
